Blue Sky Church began with a team of 50 people moving to the Seattle area from Southern Illinois during the summer of 2004. Our first Sunday services began that following October in the Meydenbauer Center in Downtown Bellevue. In 2005 the overseers of Blue Sky located a more permanent home in Bellevue between Northup and Bel-Red Road. By leasing and renovating a dilapidated warehouse and office space, the church has continued to add people. Today we are a church approaching 500 people and growing!
The history of how Blue Sky Church started, however, began well before the summer of 2004.
Steve Morgan, Blue Sky's lead pastor, started Vine Church in Carbondale, Illinois in 1995 with 6 people. Over a few years the church had grown to over 600. While at a conference in 2003, Steve felt God's leading to "do it again," specifically feeling God's direction to start a church in the Seattle area. After much prayer, counsel, and confirmation, Steve, his family, and a team of about 50 people relocated and made Seattle home. Blue Sky Church has grown into a vibrant church made up of people from all around the area. We are part of a small relational network of eight churches who encourage and build up one another.
Our desire is to be a Seattle-area church where people can come in and learn about Jesus in a way that is impactful and life changing. We also hope to be a church that plants many other healthy churches in university cities.
Blue Sky is a multi-ethnic church of students and professionals, married and single, old and young, children and youth. Our services are casual with great music, relevant teaching from the Bible, and a fun children's and youth program.
So why are we called Blue Sky?
While visiting Seattle to check out the area in 2004, Steve Morgan (our lead pastor), was sitting at a Starbucks coffee shop in Bellevue. The typical overcast fall weather was blanketing the area when all of a sudden the sun broke through the thick covering. While watching this, Steve had the words come to his mind...
When I awoke from my long, dark slumber...
All I could see was Blue Sky!
So the church finally got its name, Blue Sky!
Finding God is much like this! Sometimes it can feel as if we are covered by a thick, dark cloud as we go through daily life - we can't see where we're going, and finding God feels difficult.
Sometimes it's hard to believe that the sun might ever shine on us again. But then there's a break in the clouds, and we can finally see light come through! We named the church Blue Sky because this is life with Jesus. We can finally see and breathe and love and live. There's Blue Sky!
